__Leadership in research policy__
\\ \\
At my university I have been chair of the university Research Council (2007-2009). The Research Council has 24 members, full professors, appointed because of their scientific excellence and expertise. The Council administers funding for research professors, fellowships and projects in all disciplines from humanities, science & technology and biomedical sciences. It relies on peer review from international panels, where the Council provides the integration and final review across all disciplines.
\\ \\
I have been coordinator for research and member of the board of the group Biomedical Sciences (2009-2012). The group BMS includes 14 departments across the 3 faculties, Medicine, Pharmacy and Movement&Rehabilitation Sciences. This function provides strategic guidance for policy of funding, advice and career support for young researchers.
\\ \\
I take an active interest in research policy at European and international level. In the European Society of Cardiology I have been Board member (2004-2006). I was co-founder and chair of the Council Basic Cardiovascular Sciences (2006-2008), which united several working groups of ESC and sister societies of different disciplines. I was member of the EU affairs committee (2008 - 2015) and responsible for EU funding. I was member of the Basic Sciences equivalent Council of the American Heart Association. I was co-founder and president (2010 – 2015) and board member (2016 - ) of the Alliance for Biomedical Research Europe, a large consortium of scientific societies advocating support for research at European level (http://www.biomedeurope.org). \\
Currently I am chair of the European Commission's Scientific Panel for Health (SPH), a science-led expert group based on the provisions of the Horizon 2020 Specific Programme that has been tasked with helping to achieve better health and wellbeing for all (https://ec.europa.eu/programmes/horizon2020/en/h2020-section/scientific-panel-health-sph).
