Professor Nicola Segata, Ph.D., is a Principal Investigator at the CIBIO Department of the University of Trento (Italy) and the European Institute of Oncology in Milan (Italy). He is a recognized global leader in microbiome research, metagenomics, and computational biology. \\
\\
Prof. Segata founded his laboratory in 2013, which now includes over 25 scientists. His research, supported by the European Research Council and other European and International agencies as well as private companies (over 14M EUR secured so far), investigates the diversity of the human microbiome and its influence on health and disease using a combination of experimental and computational methods.  His work has been published in top journals, including multiple papers in the last five years that appeared in Cell, Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Microbiology, and Cell Host & Microbe.\\

Prof. Segata and his group have made significant contributions to microbiome research, including developing widely-used computational tools (several thousands new downloads every month), enabling the study of the human microbiome at the level of single-nucleotide variation between similar strains, discovering the role of person-to-person microbiome transmission in shaping personal microbiomes, studying the microbiome's role in cancer development and treatment, unravelling the diversity and structure of the food microbiome, and understanding the microbiome impact on diet and cardiometabolic health.\\

He is a frequent keynote speaker at the most influential international conferences, and holds important roles in the board of influential granting agencies and scientific journals.
