*__1938__: born at Ludwigshafen am Rhein (Germany) 

*__1957-1964__: After high school he studied Musicology, German Studies, History, Philosophy and Education at the Universities of Mainz (1957), Kiel (1958 - 1960: at Anna Amalia Abert and Walter Wiora) and since 1961 in Saarbrücken (in Walter Salmen)  and since 1963 as a fellow of the Fritz-Thyssen-Stiftung

*__1963/64__: PhD with a thesis on "Sing-ability, popularity and art song" at the University of Saarbruecken at Walter Salmen, August and Herman Long Krings (summa cum laude and Faculty Award)

*__1964/65__:Head of the National Bibliography , the German hymn music history at the Archive in Kassel, Germany 

*__1966-1998__: As the successor to Carl Dahlhaus, first officer, since 1972 as executive director of the state Department of Ethnography of the Musicology Department at the University of Kiel

*__1972-1984__:Project manager at the Sonderforschungsbereich 17 ( Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea Research ), Since 1976 the administrative function as a board member 

*__1973-1990__:At the Music high school Lübeck  in charge of  education for secondary school music teachers in Schleswig-Holstein, since 1975 Member of the Scientific Examination Office

*__1977__:Habilitation in musicology at the University of Kiel
*__1977-1978__:Invitation as a representative of Jan Maegaard the semester at the Institute of Musicology at the University of Copenhagen 

*__1982__:Appointment as Associate Professor at the University of Kiel 

*Spring __1989__:	Invitations to research at the Newcomb Department of Music and The Amistad Research Center at Tulane University in New Orleans

*__1990__:Invitation as a "gæsteforsker" at the State Music Academy in Oslo 

*__1997/98__:Invitation to the Center for Advanced Study in Oslo

*__1998__:Appointment as professor of musicology at the University of Copenhagen. 

*since __1998__:Member of Norske Videnskaps-Akademi in Oslo and the Kungl. Musikaliska academies in Stockholm

*since __1999__:Member of the Royal. Danske Selskab Videnskabernes in Copenhagen

*since __2002__: Together with Nils Holger Petersen, head of the Theological Faculty of Copenhagen University established the Center for the Study of the Cultural Heritage of Medieval Rituals (Danmarks Grundforskningsfond)

*since __2005__: Member of the  Academia Europaea

*__2008__:Retirement, the commemorative ceremony with A due and awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany
