Patrik Schmuki studied Physical Chemistry at the University of Basel (CH) (MSc, 1988), and carried out his graduate studies at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich (PhD, 1992). After employment as Research Associate at the ETH Zurich (1992-1994), he worked as guest scientist at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, NY (USA), using synchrotron techniques for thin film studies (1994-1995). From 1995-1997 he was research scientist at the Institute for Microstructural Sciences of the National Research Council of Canada, where his research focused on surface phenomena on Si and III-V semiconductors. In 1997, he was appointed “Maitre d'enseignement et de recherche” (Associate Professor) for Microstructuring of Materials at the Department of Materials Science of EPFL Lausanne. In 2000, he joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at FAU as Full Professor (C4) and head of the Institute for Surface Science and Corrosion.\\

Patrik Schmuki’s track record includes >800 publications in peer-reviewed journals with h-index of 140. He has been Thomson Reuters / Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in 2013–2021.\\

Patrik Schmuki is the recipient of numerous honours and awards. In 1992, his PhD thesis was awarded with the ETH Medal for outstanding dissertations. In 1994, he received the Swiss National Science Foundation fellowship for Advanced Researchers. In 1997, he became PROFIL fellow of the Swiss National Science Foundation. Other awards include the H.H. Uhlig Award NACE (2005), Fellow of the Electrochemical Society (2008), Volta Award of the Electrochemical Society (2008), ECS H.H. Uhlig Award (2011), Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2012), Fellow of the International Society of Electrochemistry (2013), Giulio Natta Award (Politecnico di Milano, 2020), Heinz Gerischer Award, Electrochemical Society (2023).\\

Since 2016 he is Honorary professor of the Palacky University Oloumuc, Czech Republic. He is visiting professor at Wuhan University (since 2022) and Sichuan University (since 2025).\\

Patrik Schmuki received the prestigious Reinhart Koselleck Funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG, 2010). In 2013, he was awarded an ERC Advanced Investigator grant.\\

He is an active member of the Electrochemical Society (ECS) and of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE). From 2007-2008, he was member of the board of directors of the Electrochemical Society. From 2010 - 2011, he was chair of the New Technology Committee of the Electrochemical Society. He started as member (2000 - 2005) of the Corrosion Division of the Electrochemical Society, and then became vice-chair (2005-2006) and chair (2007 - 2008) of the division. He also served as chairman of the European Section of the Electrochemical Society (2002 - 2004). He has served as chair of division 4 (Electrochemical Materials Science) of the International Society of Electrochemistry.
