Beate Roessler is professor of philosophy and chair of the department of philosophy at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. She formerly taught philosophy at the Free University, Berlin, and at the University of Bremen, Germany, and as a Socrates Professor of Philosophy at Leiden University.  She was a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin, at the Center for Agency, Value, and Ethics at Macquarie University, Sydney, at the University of Melbourne, Law School and a visiting professor at the New York University. She is a co-editor of the European Journal of Philosophy and a member of various advisory boards. She is a member of the Göttinger Akademie der Wissenschaften and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Roessler has published widely on many issues in ethics and social philosophy; her publications include Privacies. Philosophical Evaluations, (ed.), Stanford UP, 2004; The Value of Privacy, Polity Press 2005; Social Dimensions of Privacy. Interdisciplinary Perspectives (ed. with D.
