!!Piet Rietveld
!Short laudatio by Peter Nijkamp
\\
Piet Rietveld (1952) studied econometrics at Erasmus University, Rotterdam (cum laude degree) and received his PhD in economics at Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. He worked at the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (Austria) and was research co-ordinator at Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana in Salatiga, Indonesia. Since 1990 he has been professor in Transport Economics at the Faculty of Economics, Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. He is a fellow at the Tinbergen Institute.
\\ \\
Piet Rietveld is one of the world’s leading transport economists. He has published hundreds of articles in international refereed journals. His main contributions have been:
\\ \\
- The introduction of mathematical modelling and econometrics in a research area that used to be rather descriptive.
» The positioning of transport economics in a broader general economic framework, in particular welfare theory, spatial economics and logistics.
- The search for new solid theoretical foundations for transport economics, to be tested by advanced statistical methods.
\\ \\
His work is highly cited world-wide and he is the scholar with the highest productivity on world rank lists of economists in his field. He is a member of numerous editorial boards, is active in many international professional organisations and is often a key note speaker at international meetings. He has also been very successful as supervisor of many Ph.D students (more than 50), some of whom have already obtained a chair as professor (in both the Netherlands and abroad).
