Jose Luis Riechmann became an ICREA Research Professor and joined the Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG) in 2008, after fifteen years of scientific career in the United States, working both in the academia and in the industry. Prior to joining ICREA and CRAG, he was Director of the Millard and Muriel Jacobs Genetics and Genomics Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) (2002-2008), and a Senior Scientist at Mendel Biotechnology, Inc. (1998-2002), a plant genomics and biotechnology company founded in 1997.
\\ \\
Results from his research have been published in top scientific journals. At Mendel Biotechnology, he directed a comprehensive analysis of the Arabidopsis genome to identify its full complement of transcription factors. This was a landmark study that was published in Science in the year 2000, and that is still considered a reference in the field (837 citations until present). Two articles describing results from his current work have also been recently published in Science. The results of other research projects were published in Nature, PNAS, PLoS Genetics, Development, The Plant Cell and other major journals.
\\ \\
Research performed at Mendel Biotechnology (and also at Caltech) has resulted in 15 patents already granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office, as well as in an additional 20 foreign or international patents. Together with engineers from Caltech, he founded a start-up company -Veracron- based on the real-time DNA microarray technology that they had developed.
\\ \\
Coming back to Spain, he has assembled an international research group (current members are from France, China, Argentina, and Chile) that has received financial support from the Spanish national research program (MICINN/MEC), as well as from the European FP7 program and from EMBO. He is currently Director of the Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics in Barcelona.\\
