Then,  moved to Brest  (France) in a telecommunications  engineer school, where he created and  managed the "computer  science and engineering" department. In 1984:  moved back to the university of Rennes where, since then, he been a professor in computer science. At IRISA (CNRS-INRIA-Univ. lab), he  founded  a research group on  Distributed Algorithms in  1984   (one of the very first groups on this topic  in Europe).  His  research  interests:  distributed   algorithms,   distr. computing  systems,   distr. computability and dependability.  His  main interest:  fundamental principles  that underlie  distributed computing  systems.   Principal Investigator  of  many research grants (founded by  EC, private companies, or French government).  He obtained  grants  from  binational  programmes  between  France and  Brazil, Hong-Kong,   Israel,   Italy,  Japan, Mexico,  Portugal, and   USA ).  Invited by  more than 30  universities all  over the world to give lectures on distributed computing.

Up  to now: 140 papers  in journals (covering both theory and practice (e.g.,  the Journal of the ACM and  IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering), and  more than  300 papers in conferences and workshops  (as diverse as ACM TOCS and  IEEE SRDS).  He has also  written  11 books (MIT Press, Wiley, Springer).  Invited speaker  in 28 int'l  conferences  (including  DISC, SIROCCO, EUROPAR, ICDCN, IEEE NCA, and  OPODIS). His   (Google Scholar) h-index is 49.  PC member in more  than 180 conferences . As chair/member:  served  in steering committees of prestigious conf. (such as ACM PODC, DISC, IEEE ICDCS).   Since  2006: European representative in the IEEE  TC on Distributed Computing. Since 2010: senior member of the  Institut Universitaire de France,  and  2015  recipient of the Prize for innovation in distributed computing.
