!!Ioan-Aurel Pop - Biography
\\
President of the Romanian Academy (since 2018), Ioan-Aurel Pop graduated from the "Babes-Bolyai" University, Faculty of History and Philosophy (Cluj-Napoca) in 1979, as valedictorian. As was customary in those days, Pop spent the next five years (1979-1984) teaching at high-school level in Cluj County, before returning to the university, as a teaching assistant (Chair of Medieval Studies). After 1989, following the successful presentation of his PhD thesis (irrespective of topic, theses were restricted to 250 pages in that age), Pop rose within a decade to university Professor and PhD supervisor. Before being twice elected rector of the "Babes-Bolyai" University (in 2012 and in 2016), he served as director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, the Romanian Institute of Cultural and Humanistic Research in Venice and of the Centre of Transylvanian Studies (of the Romanian Academy, since 2007). The latter two stations allowed Pop, a trained medievalist, to further develop his academic research in the archives and libraries of Italy (foremost in Venice, Rome and Milan) and Central Europe (chiefly in Budapest and Vienna). As a result, Pop has published and edited more than fifty books and volumes, has authored roughly two hundred articles and studies and published nearly a thousand documents (from the 1300s to the mid-1500s). These triggered Pop's election to academies and learned societies throughout Europe (from the Romanian Academy in Bucharest to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Salzburg or to the Ateneo Veneto in Venice).\\
