After undergraduate and graduate studies at the Moscow State Lomonosov University and The Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, V. A. Plungian has held positions at various universities in Moscow, including (since 1989) the Moscow State Lomonosov University, where he is (since 2013) Head of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics. Since 2004 he is Head of the Department of Linguistic Typology at the Institute of Linguistics (RAS), and since 2006 also of the Department of Corpus Linguistics and Linguistic Poetics at the Vinogradov Institute of Russian Language (RAS); he has been Deputy Director of the latter institute since 2013. He has worked at a number of scientific centres in Europe (Belgium, Germany, Norway, France etc.) and has carried out field work in Africa (Mali) and various parts of the Russian Federation, including the Caucasus. In 2016 he became the editor-in-chef of the leading Russian linguistics journal, Voprosy Jazykoznanija. He was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Department of History and Philology) in 2009, and a full member in 2016. He is one of the creators of both the Russian National Corpus and the Eastern Armenian National Corpus.\\ \\
