Pittock received an M.A. from the University of Glasgow, then won the Snell Exhibition to study at Balliol College, Oxford where he completed his D.Phil. \\

In 1989, Pittock was appointed as a lecturer and then in 1994, reader at the University of Edinburgh, where he also had Faculty and University roles, including the corporate policy lead for the University's Scotland-related policies. He moved to Glasgow in 1996 to take up a chair in Literature at the University of Strathclyde, also serving as Head of Department and as a member of the Governing Body.\\

In 2003 he moved to the University of Manchester as Professor of Scottish and Romantic Literature. \\

In 2007 he took up the Bradley Chair in Literature at the University of Glasgow, a position he has occupied ever since. In additionto being chair of literature, he has also been a very active member of the academic community in Glasgow as well as within the international networks of scholars of Romanticism, comparative nationalisms, and British Isles studies and held senior positions at vice-rector level within the university.\\ \\
