Paweł Olko graduated in physics in 1982 from AGH University of Science and Technology, Kraków, Poland. His Master of Science thesis:delat with "Investigation of radiobiological effectiveness of Cf-252 and 14 MeV neutrons on pink mutations in trandescantia clone 02". Between 1986 and 1989, he was a PhD fellow at the Institute for Medicine Nuclear, Research Centre KFA Jülich, Germany. He received his Ph.D. in physics from the Institute of Nuclear Physics Kraków in 1990 with a thesis entitled: “Fluctuations of energy deposited in biological targets by ionising radiations”. He completed  his Habilitation degree in 2003 with a thesis entitled: “Microdosimetric modelling of physical and biological detectors”. He received the Polish state professorship title in 2010.\\

In 1982-1983, he was research assistant at the Institute of Nuclear Physics and Techniques, AGH, Kraków, Poland, and in 1983-1985, he was research assistant at Institute of Nuclear Physics, IFJ, Kraków, Poland. Between 1998 and1999, he worked at the Dosimetry and Medical Physics Section at IAEA in Vienna, Austria. Between 2004 and 2016, he was deputy scientific director at the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN) and between 2012 and 2016 the director of the Bronowice Cyclotron Centre, the first proton therapy centre in Poland.  Since 2016, he is leading the Division of Applied Physics at IFJ PAN\\

His main scientific interests and competence are in the fields of microdosimetry, dosimetry, solid-state detectors, radiation protection, medical physics and proton radiotherapy. He published more than 200 publications in international scientific journals. He was involved in activities of numerous national and international committees and organisations. Between 2004 and 2007, he was the Chair of the International Solid-State Dosimetry Organisation, ISSDO. Since 2002, he is a member of the EURADOS Council, and since 2005, he is member of the Article 31 Group of Experts, European Commission, Luxembourg. Since 2016, he is the commissioner of the International Commission of Radiation Measurements and Units, ICRU.\\ \\
