Stefan Offermanns, born in 1964, graduated in Medicine from the Free University Berlin in 1990, where he obtained an M.D. degree specializing in Pharmacology in 1991. Until 1993, he was a postdoc at the Institute of Pharmacology at the Free University Berlin, where he worked on G-protein-coupled receptors and their mechanisms of signaling. From 1994 - 1997, he was a postdoc at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena (USA), where he developed several genetic knockouts of G-protein alpha-subunits leading to the discovery of G-protein functions in angiogenesis and hemostasis. From 1997 - 2000, he continued his studies as a group leader at the Institute of Pharmacology at the Free University Berlin, where he obtained a medical specialization in Pharmacology and Toxicology. From 2000 - 2009, he was Chair of Pharmacology and director of the Institute of Pharmacology at the University of Heidelberg. His research was devoted to the role of G-protein-mediated signaling and plexin signaling in development, cardiovascular system and metabolism.
