In 1963 I received my first university degree in Political Science at  the Catholic University of Milan and  then obtained  a grant to attend   ISPI (Institute for the Studies of International Politics). I then went back to the Catholic University as Assistant Professor  in the Institute of Sociology. In 1968 - 1970 I attended Northwestern University (Master in Sociology), and Harvard University (Master in Education). In 1970 - 1980 I worked at Formez-Institute for Training and Studies in Roma. 1980 - 1987 Associate Professor at University of Catania, Dept. Political Science. 1987 - 1994 Associate Professor at University of Milano, Dept. of Political Science. 1994 - 1998 Full Professor at University of Trieste, Dept. of Political Science. 1998 - 2009 Full Professor at University of Milano-Bicocca,Dept. of Sociology. In 1967, I  moved to Rome,  where I joined Formez  (Center for  training  and research on Italy’s  southern regions). In  the period 1968 - 1970  I won a Harkness Fellowship from the Commonwealth Fund, and  on leave of absence from Formez, attended  The Northwestern University (Master in Sociology) and Harvard University (Master in Education). Back at  Formez, I was put  in charge of a project for the development of a network of Centers for Cultural Services in  the Southern regions of Italy. In 1974 I accepted a post  to teach Sociology of Education at the University of Catania (Sicily). In 1980 I left Formez and  became associate professor of Sociology of Education  at the same University  of Catania. In 1987, I  transferred to the State University of Milan (Faculty of Political Science) and  in 1994  became full professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Trieste.  \\

I then transferred to the newly created University of Milan "Bicocca" (Department of Sociology) in 1998, and  retired in 2009, though I continued to teach there until 2013. I remained at Bicocca as a member of the internal Independent Evaluation Unit ("Nucleo di valutazione") until 2018. \\

Meanwhile, from 2015 to 2021 I was a member of Evaluation Units formed by the Italian "Autonomy Agency for the Evaluation  of Universities and Research Institutes"(ANVUR) to visit and evaluate all Italian universities. In 2021, as contract researcher at University of Milano-Bicocca, I started - with colleagues from Universities  of Bicocca and  Pavia as well as  the National Council of Research (CNR) - a research programme  on the Third Mission policy in 12 Italian universities.\\

My main scientific interests are related to the comparative analysis of  systems of education  (especially higher); the changes in  academic life (specifically the impact of assessment, competition and outreach activities); the relations between education and the labour market; the impact of education in developing regions.\\ \\
