Sorin Mitu was born in 1965 at Arad (Romania). Since 1990 he teaches at Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, the largest university in Romania. His courses tackle such subjects as Theories of Nationalism, Modern History and Symbolic Geographies. Since 2008 he is the head of the Department of Modern History, Archival Studies and Ethnology of the Babeş-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca. He is an expert evaluator of the Romanian Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education and he was an expert of the Soros Foundation. He conducted major research projects financed by the European Union’s PHARE Programme (1996 - 1997), by the National Authority for Scientific Research (2006-2008), by the National Council for Scientific Research in Higher Education (2006-2008) and by the Executive Agency for Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation Funding (2011 - 2024). Sorin Mitu is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Social Theory and Research, Studia Universitatis Babeş-Bolyai, Historical Anthropology Notebooks and was a reviewer for the East Central Europe Journal and the Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies.

His books and articles are available in Romanian, Hungarian, English, French, German and Spanish and were published at prestigious publishing houses from Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Spain and Canada (Böhlau Verlag, Peter Lang, New Academic Press, or Central European University Press). He has collaborated with the most important Romanian publishing houses, namely Humanitas and Polirom. The scientific impact of the Sorin Mitu’s books is revealed by over 60 favourable reviews, almost half of those being published in prominent foreign journals, such as: American Historical Review, Nations and Nationalism, Nationalities Papers, Slavic Review, The Slavonic and East European Review, Millenium.
