__Research areas:__

*1985-2000: Distributed algorithms - research on the concepts of time and state in distributed systems,  vector clocks as a generalization of Lamport clocks, novel algorithms for termination detection in distributed systems and calculation of the "global virtual time" for parallel simulations.  \\
*2000-today: Ubiquitous computing and the Internet of Things - forming a research community in Europe (initiated  summer schools and started new conference series such as "Pervasive" in 2003 or "Internet of Things" in 2008, organized "Ubicomp"  in a new and substantially enlarged format in 2013 in Zurich), conceptual and experimental research on infrastructure for cooperating smart objects, interaction in smart environments, privacy in ubicomp, sensor networks, smart energy.

Research funded by Swiss and German national science foundations, EU, and industry. More than 150 scientific publications (research papers, conference contributions, and edited books).\\

Teaching and lecturing: introductory courses (general computer science, distributed systems) at the Bachelor level, courses on distributed algorithms, ubiquitous computing, smart energy at the Master level. Numerous invited talks and keynotes. \\

Editorial board member among others for  Distributed Computing (until 2010), Informatik-Spektrum, Personal and Ubiquitous Computing, Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). Extensive reviewing activity for funding organizations and search committees.  Reviewer and PC member for numerous conferences and journals. Member of several evaluation committees and scientific advisory boards. Elected member of the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina) and of acatech (the German Academy of Science and Engineering), corresponding member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences.
