Christoph Maack received his MD at the University of Cologne (Germany) in 2000. Between 2000 and 2017, he worked at the Department of Cardiology, Saarland University in Homburg, Germany. From 2002-2005, he was a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Cardiology of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, US. He obtained board certification in Internal Medicine (2011), Cardiology (2015) and Intensive Care Medicine (2018). He received the Emmy Noether program (2006 - 2011) and a Heisenberg Full Professorship (2012-2017) from the German Research Foundation. Since 2017, he chairs the Department of Translational Research at the Comprehensive Heart Failure Center (CHFC) at the University Clinic in Würzburg, Germany, and is Spokesperson of the CHFC. \\

For his research, which focuses on contractile, mitochondrial and metabolic dysfunction in heart failure, he received the Franz-Maximilian-Groedel- (2007), Albert-Fraenkel- (2014) and Arthur-Weber-Award (2015) of the German Cardiac Society (DGK). Since 2020, he is Associate Editor of Circulation Research (#1 basic science Journal in Cardiology) and advisor to Nature Reviews Cardiology. Since 2023, he is Chair of the COST Action EU-METAHEART (CA22169), a EUropean network to tackle METAbolic defects in HEART failure ([https://cost-metaheart.eu]). \\

Maack was Board member of the Heart Failure Association (HFA) of the European Society of Cardiology from 2010 - 2016 and chaired its Basic Science Section (2014 - 2016). For the German Cardiac Society, he was a member of the Program Committee (2015 - 2018) and the Commission for Experimental Cardiology (2021 - 2025), Congress President of the Annual Meeting (2024), and launched the Task Force “Planetary Health” (2024). Since 2025, he is member of its Executive Board. Since 2018, Maack is on the Council of the International Society of Heart Research (ISHR; European Section) and served as its President from 2023 - 2025.
