1. Ma D, Hossain M, Chow A., Arshad M, Battson R, Sanders RD, Mehmet M, Edwards D, Franks NP, and Maze M. Xenon and hypothermia combine synergistically to provide potent and long-lasting neuroprotection from neonatal asphyxia. Annals of Neurology 2005;58:182-193. \\
\\
This pioneering paper shows for the first time that xenon and hypothermia in combination protect neonatal brain ischaemia/hypoxia brain damage. The strategy has been successfully translated to Phase III clinical trial. Citation #: 304.\\
\\
2. Ma D, Lim T, Xu J, Tang H, Wan Y, Zhao H, Hossain M, Maxwell PH, and Maze M. Xenon preconditioning protects against renal ischemic-reperfusion injury via HIF-1α activation. Journal of American Society of Nephrology 2009;20:713-720.\\
\\
This work shows for the first time that a pharmacological intervention induces the up-regulation of hypoxic inducible factor, and subsequently protects kidney injury from hypoxia ischemia reperfusion. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned the use of xenon and argon by competitive athletes based upon Prof Ma's reports on the effect of these noble gases on HIF-1alpha and the downstream effector, erythropoeitin. Citation #: 242.\\
\\
3. Wan Y, Xu J, Meng FM, Bao YH, Ge YY, Lobo N, Vizcaychipi MP, Zhang DH, Gentleman SM, Maze M, Ma D. Cognitive decline following major surgery is associated with Alzheimer’s Disease pathogenesis in old mice. Critical Care Medicine 2010:38;2190-2198. \\
\\
This research, for the first time, demonstrates that surgery may accelerate the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Citation #: 178.\\
\\
4. Huang H, Benzonana LL, Zhao H, Watts HR, NJS Perry, Bevan C, Brown R, Ma D. Prostate cancer cell malignancy via modulation of HIF-1α pathway with isoflurane and propofol alone and in combination. Br J Cancer 2014;111:1338-49.\\
\\
This is a breakthrough study to show that a commonly clinically used inhalational agent has a strong cancer cell malignant effect in contrast to an intravenous anaesthetic propofol which is suppressive to cancer cells. This publication opens a new research area of anaesthesia. The publication was accompanying with an editorial to highlight its importance. Citation #: 142.\\

\\
This is the first study to show that noble gas xenon can prolong renal graft survival. Based on this work, the new generation of organ graft preservation solution is being developed. Citation #: 65. \\
\\
6. Zhao H, Luo X, Zhou Z, Liu J, Tralau-Stewart C, George AJ, Ma D. Early treatment with xenon protects against the cold ischemia associated with chronic allograft nephropathy in rats. Kidney Int. 2014;85:112-23.\\
\\
This is the first study to show that noble gas xenon can protect renal graft and negate chronic allograft nephropathy. Novel graft preservation solution is being developed based on the finding s of this study. Citation #: 30.\\

\\
This is the first study to show that statins can protect brain and preserved its function that could be damaged by surgery due to its triggering neuroinflammation. Citation #: 39.\\

\\
This study is for the first time to demonstrate that postoperative delirium (POD) can be treated with a pharmacological intervention. Guideline for POD treatment has been changed following the findings of this study. Citation #: 389. Cited in F1000.\\
