!Interests and Research

Dr. Kiessling develops and evaluates novel imaging modalities, contrast agents and theranostics for the characterization and treatment of cancer, cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases. He has a translational focus and many projects are at the interface between preclinical and clinical research. In this context, he often adopt a multimodal approach based on combinations of MRI, CT, ultrasound, optical and photoacoustic imaging, nuclear medicine techniques and magnetic particle imaging. To develop image-guided therapies, we combine our pathophysiological and pharmacological research with research in device engineering, image reconstruction and advanced data analysis. Basic research into the tissue microenvironment (including barriers to drug delivery) is providing him with new imaging biomarkers and new mechanistic insights that can be used to identify diagnostic biomarkers. Here, imaging features and omics data are considered together, evaluated using radiomic and radiogenomic approaches, and used to support mathematical disease models.
In this context, notable achievements are the co-development of Motion Model Ultrasound Localization Microscopy, a super-resolution ultrasound method that non-invasively visualizes microvasculature in tumors and the use of PBCA microbubbles as ultrasound contrast agents and drug carriers, enabling precise, ultrasound-triggered drug release in tumors.

The second focus of Kiessling is on materials and concepts to improve drug delivery to tumors. This includes the development and evaluation of novel biomaterials, nanoparticles, polymeric carriers, liposomes, micelles, microbubbles and multi-scale hydrogels, as well as physical and biological manipulation of the vasculature and adjacent tumor stroma to enhance drug accumulation and penetration.
