Ireneusz Paweł Karolewski is Professor of Political Theory and Democracy Research at the Leipzig University. Karolewski obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Potsdam (Germany), where he also was assistant professor from 1999 to 2008. His main areas of research are European integration, political theory, EU foreign policy, collective identity as well as nationalism in Europe. His second book "Citizenship and collective identity in Europe" (Routledge 2010) systematically explored the relationship between citizenship and collective identity in the European Union, integrating several fields of research in social sciences. The book received the Leopoldina research prize in 2012.

Karolewski’s research has been published in Journal of Common Market Studies, Communist and Postcommunist Studies, Europe-Asia Studies, European Law Journal and Journal of European Integration. He is the managing editor of the Annual of European and Global Studies (Edinburgh University Press), co-convenor of the ECPR Standing Group on Identity as well as associate editor of  the Political Research Exchange (PRX) of the ECPR. He regularly contributes to Verfassungsblog, LSE EUROPP blog and Global Policy online. Karolewski has been visiting professor and visiting scholar at the Harvard University (2014, 2015), the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2014), Université de Montréal (2013, 2017), New York University (2012), Pondicherry University, India (2011), University of California in Santa Barbara (2010, 2011, 2013) and the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Lille, France (2007, 2008).\\ \\
