Alik Ismail-Zadeh (born in 1961 in Baku, Azerbaijan) graduated from the Baku State University (BSc in mathematics, 1982) and the M. Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia (MSc in mathematical physics, 1983) before being awarded Ph.D. (1990) and D.Sc. (1997) degrees in theoretical geophysics from the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has been lecturing at the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas in Moscow (Russia), the University of Karlsruhe (now KIT) in Karlsruhe (Germany), and the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste (Italy), and have been a visiting scholar/professor in several European and other academic institutions and universities, incl. the University of Cambridge, University of Uppsala, KTH-Stockholm, UCLA, and the University of Tokyo.

His scientific interests cover lithosphere and mantle dynamics, their surface manifestations (incl. seismicity, lava dynamics, sedimentary basins), and application of the research to benefit the society (inlc. natural hazards and disaster risk research) through multidisciplinary synthesis and theoretical and quantitative analysis. He is a principal author and co-author of over 150 peer-reviewed research papers, book chapters, and books (HI:23). Ismail-Zadeh was Inaugural Secretary of the International Science Council, Secretary-General of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), Founding President of the Natural Hazards Focus Group of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and Founding Vice-President of the IUGG Commission on Geophysical Risk and Sustainability. He has also been chair or member of several committees of European, international, and intergovernmental organizations, including the European Geosciences Union (EGU), EuroScience (founding member), AGU, the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), and the UNESCO-IUGS International Geoscience Programme. He is a recipient of several awards including an award from the Academia Europaea.\\
