!!Haiyan Hu - Biography
\\
Haiyan Hu received PhD degree in solid mechanics in 1988 from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA), where he started his independent research on dynamics and control of flexible structures and became a Professor of Mechanics in 1994. In NUAA, he made important contributions to the nonlinear dynamics of controlled mechanical systems with time delays and memory retardations, including the rules of their stabilities and bifurcations. Based on the rules, he proposed the delayed control for active flutter suppression of aircraft structures and greatly increased the safe flight speeds of flying-wing aircraft.\\
\\
In 2007, Prof. Hu moved to Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), where he began to study the dynamics of flexible multibody systems. He and his students established a systematic approach of computational dynamics of flexible multibody systems and realized their topology optimizations. Their approach has paved a way to analyze and design the dynamics of large space structures and ensured the successful deployment of large satellite antennas on orbit.\\
\\
Prof. Hu has published 4 monographs and 258 papers in international journals, which have received over 20,000 citations. His keynote lectures at 45 international congresses/conferences have demonstrated the achievements of those works. For example, he delivered the unique Sectional Lecturer in dynamics at the 24th International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, which is called Olympics in Mechanics while an individual receives only one invitation for Sectional Lecturer during entire career. In addition, he is the first Asian recipient of Thomas K. Caughey Dynamics Medal, the highest prize in nonlinear dynamics from ASEM for one individual per year.\\
\\
Prof. Hu has supervised 62 PhD students and 46 of them received degrees. Among them, 3 received the State Award of Excellent Dissertation, over 30 have been professors in research universities.\\
\\
As NUAA President from 2001 to 2007 and PIT President from 2007 to 2017, Prof. Hu made substantial efforts to upgrade research and education at the two universities and promote collaborations with top universities in UK, Germany, Italy, Hungary and Ukraine, consequently both moved up to the top engineering universities in Asia.\\
\\
During 2010~2014, Prof. Hu served as President of Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and successfully organized the 23rd IUTAM Congress in 2012, with over 1,800 attendees from 70 countries. He chaired 18 international conferences and symposia, such as IUTAM Symposium on Nonlinear Dynamic Systems with Uncertainties in 2006. In addition, Prof. Hu has been a Presidium Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences since 2016, overseeing the scientific integrity of the academy.\\ \\
