Prof. Alexey Gvishiani is vice-chair of the Scientific Council of the International Institute for Applied System Analysis (IIASA), Luxenburg, Austria and Director/Chairman of Scientific Council of the RAS Geophysical Center.

He has a broad international education, including postgraduate training in USA.
\\ \\
Alexey graduated from the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) before earning his math PhD from MSU (1974) and Doctor of Sciences degree in geophysics from Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth (1984). He worked with geoscience institutions and universities in Austria, France, India, Italy, Russia, Spain and USA, including Instituts de Physique du Globe de Paris and Strasbourg, Madrid Institute of Geography, Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

He was scientific leader of the European Union Information Society Technoligies (IST) program advancement and propagation in the former Soviet Union countries (1996–2003). He is RAS delegate to the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (ICSU) and the Committee on Data of ICSU (CODATA) and ICSU delegate to CODATA. He is CODATA - RAS - European Geoscience Union research group leader for unique digital magnetic Atlas from 1500 till 2010.

His research interests mainly concern seismic zonation and measuring, mapping and understanding the multitude of magnetic fields in and near Earth. Alexey focuses his work on important areas by participating in the global efforts of measuring Earth's magnetic field and leading such efforts in Russia. He also made important contributions to the development of geoinformatics and earth sciences data mining at the international level.

Alexey published more than 300 papers (among them 174 publications in ISI journals). He was involved in organizing more than 30 conferences and workshops. He led numerous multi-partner research projects at the national, European and international levels.\\
