After receiving a Master Degree from the University of Paris in 1989 and a PhD from the University of Orsay in 1992, Rachid Guerraoui got a Habilitation to Direct Research from the University of Grenoble in 1996.  Guerraoui has been Computer Science Professor at EPFL since 1999, as an Assistant Professor until 2003, then Associate Professor until 2007, and since then Full Professor.  He was affiliated with HP Labs (Palo Alto) from 1998 to 1999 and MIT (Boston) from 2005 to 2006. At EPFL, he has been director of the Distributed Computing Laboratory, gathering between 10 and 20 PhD students, postdocs and interns. He also leads the faculty promotion committee of the School of Computer and Communication Systems at EPFL since 2000.\\

With a H-index of 80, Guerraroui published 121 journal papers and 343 conference papers. He published his papers on distributed computing in a wide range of conferences and journals, from theory-oriented ones like JACM, SIAM, STOC, FOCS, POPL, PODS, PODC, ICML, and Neurips, to system-oriented ones like TOCS, TODS, SOSP, OSDI, ASPLOS, PLDI, VLDB, and NSDI. Guerraoui has the highest number of published ACM PODC papers (25), ex aequo with Prof Nancy Lynch from MIT. \\

He received best paper awards in conferences like Eurosys, DISC and IPDPS, as well as the 10-years most influential award in Middleware (2004-2014). He has been invited to deliver keynotes at various conferences like POPL, ECOOP, PODC, DISC and Middleware. Guerraoui has been associate editor of the Journal of the ACM (2004-2024).  \\

He chaired the working group on Object-Oriented Programming for the ACM 50’th anniversary as well as many Program Committees of conferences like PODC, DISC and ECOOP. He led the steering committee of DISC and ECOOP and initiated the winter school in distributed systems targeting young researchers in Europe 2008-2015. Guerraoui was elected ACM Fellow in 2012 and College de France Professor in 2018. He received an ERC Advanced Grant in 2014 as well as a Google Focused Award in 2013. In 2024, Rachid Guerraoui was awarded the Senior Dahl–Nygaard Prize. In  2025, He was awarded the ACN Luis Barroso Award \\

More than 30 PhD students that graduated under Guerraoui's supervision, some of which work at research labs and companies, some created their own companies and some are now professors, are a clear evidence for his success as a mentor. He also supervised a dozen postdocs, all are now professors. \\

Guerraoui launched the Wandida educational initiative, a library of 500++ videos - 3.000.000 views - explaining various CS techniques to Bachelor students, as well as the Zettabyte initiative, a library of 140++ videos, describing open CS problems to graduate students.  \\

He holds 6 patents on distributed computing. He also got several EU projects and dozen grants from the Swiss National Research Foundation, as well as companies like Interchain, ABB, Google, Agilent, HP, IBM and Microsoft.\\
