Professor Mika Gissler, M.Soc.Sci in Economics (1989) and Statistics (1992) and Dr.Phil in Epidemiology (1999) holds full professorships and faculty appointments at the THL Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, the University of Turku; the University of Oulu (all in Finland); and the Karolinska Institutet (Sweden). His main research focus has been in the utilization of routinely collected health and welfare registers and their provision for the research community. These include the Medical Birth Register, Hospital Discharge and Outpatient Register, Prescription Register and Cause-of-Death Registers with experience in studies using registers in all Nordic countries (i.e., Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland), and in several European countries (e.g., Germany and Estonia). \\

Professor Mika Gissler's research interests include perinatal and infant health, childhood and adolescent health, sexual and reproductive health, mental health, migrant health, and use of health care services. Increasingly, the studies have included a longitudinal component, usually from the prenatal period until adulthood. Professor Gissler has worked with international collaborative research projects for more than 20 years, including several studies in the Nordic countries (funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and Nordic Research funds) and in other European countries (funded by the European Union).\\

Currently, Professor Gissler is responsible for reproductive health statistics and registers as a team leader at THL Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare. Professor Gissler has also served for a long time in the Board of the Finnish Cancer Register (since 2001, chair since 2016) and the Board of the Finnish Register on Visually Impaired (since 2000, chair 2000 - 2009). He is an expert in questions in sexual and reproductive health and actively participating in the development of health and welfare indicators. As the responsible for international co-operation in health statistics, he has been nominated as the Finnish representative in several international collaborations in the European Union (EUROSTAT Working Group for Public Health Statistics, DG SANTE Expert Group in Health Information), OECD (Working Group Health Statistics including former chairmanship) and WHO (Correspondent for Health for all -database, member of the Expert Group on the Development of Indicators for Health, Expert Group on the Health Information Strategies in Europe, and the European Health Information Initiative). Professor Gissler has been the Finnish representative in Nordic collaboration, including for example NOMBIR - Association of the Nordic Medical Birth Registries (chair 2004 - 2006, 2017 - 2019), NOMESCO Nordic Medico-Statistical Committee (chair 2004 - 2006, 2016, 2021, 2025), and NWC Nordic Welfare Centre. \\

Professor Gissler is a well-recognised and experienced teacher with more than 600 hours of teaching in Finnish, Swedish and English, mainly on register-based research, health information systems, epidemiology and public health. He has been organising courses on Register-based Epidemiology in Finland, Sweden and China for more than 20 years with hundreds of students.\\

Professor Gissler has been the Editorial Board Member in several national and international journals and books.
