!!Helen Giamarellou - Biography

Helen Giamarellou has established the subspecialty of Infectious Diseases in Greece in 1995, and founded the Hellenic Society of Infectious Diseases in 1993. After becoming Professor of Internal Medicine in 1997, Helen Giamarellou became the founder, organizer and teacher of an obligatory innovative annual interactive course on ‘Rational Use of Antibiotics’ for all medical students (2006-present). Between 1997 and 2009, she was the Head of the newly established 4th Internal Medicine Department of Athens University Medical School, which specialised in patients with infectious diseases. She also founded a clinical research laboratorium. As emeritus professor, she became the Head of the 6th Dept. of Internal Medicine at Hygeia General Hospital with similar duties; here she continues teaching and research.

She serves as a member in 24 medical societies (16 International) and as a reviewer in 29 international journals; she has been a member of 17 national and international Committees on infectious diseases. In 2011 she founded a free-of-charge consultation Center at Hygeia Hospital on TORCH infections in pregnancy. Since 2014 in cooperation with the Hellenic Society Chemotherapy she organizes and runs educational courses for the public as well as for elementary school teachers all over Greece on ' Legends and Truths for Antibiotics and Vaccines'.

As a secretary general of 'Amphiaraion Foundation on Clinical Therapeutic Studies' in Athens, she has supervised the donation of 29 scholarships in Infectious diseases.\\
