Called by Adriano Olivetti in Ivrea, Luciano Gallino (Torino 1927) has done his sociological apprenticeship between 1956 and 1970, as assistant and then director of the center of sociological research and organization studies made in that society, the first of its kind in Italy.

Awarded the Freedom of Teaching in Sociology at the beginning of 1964, following two years was a Fellow Research Scientist at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in Stanford (CA).

From November 1965 to 1971 he was Professor at the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Humanities, University of Turin. From 1971 to 2002 he was Professor of Sociology in the Faculty of Education at the same university. He is currently Professor Emeritus of the same matter. Between 1968 and 1978 he headed the local Institute of Sociology, one of the earliest established in Italian universities.

Since the eighties he was part of the University of Turin as a representative of the Scientific Committee of the CSI-Piemonte, then covering this, from 1990 to 1993, the office of President. He founded and chaired from 1987 to 1999 the Centre for Telematics and Information Services for the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Turin, which since the early '90s has made available the Internet to thousands of students and teachers. From 1999 to late 2002 he was Director of the Department of Education Science and Training. In this role, he promoted the development of a center that specializes in the design and implementation of training courses aimed at the Open / Assisted Network
From 1979 to 1988 was president of the Italian Council of Social Sciences, a position in which he succeeded Luigi Firpo. From 1987 to 1992 he held the same office in the Association of Italian sociology. He runs from 1968, "Sociology Papers", handed down to Nicola Abbagnano tested them with Franco Ferrarotti was founded in 1951. Between 1970 and 1975 wrote the "Day", from 1983 to 2001 he worked on "Print". Since 2001, he wrote for "The Republic".
