!!Elisabetta Erba - Biography
\\
Elisabetta Erba (EE) is a micropaleontologist with expertise in calcareous nannofossils, primarily of Mesozoic age. She has developed biozonations, contributed to Timescales and implemented quantitative investigations of calcareous nannofossil assemblages aimed at evolutionary and paleoceanographic reconstructions. Her research has been deliberately conducted both individually and within multidisciplinary groups in order to continuously advance the nannofossil-specific expertise and powerfully exploit the potential of nannofossil as paleoceanographic proxies within an interdisciplinary framework. Decadal studies of calcareous nannofossils were conducted in Jurassic-Cretaceous sedimentary sequences on land and in the oceans, also through active participation to the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program.
\\ \\
Since her PhD, EE has demonstrated the capacity of introducing innovative research topics and methodologies: she was the first to use calcareous nannofossil quantitative data for cyclostratigraphy and reconstruction of biogenic calcite paleofluxes. She also revised and identified Mesozoic nannofossil indices of paleo-temperature, paleo-fertility, paleo-pCO2 as well as indices of diagenetic modifications. She has also thoroughly investigated Pleistocene-Holocene and Modern calcareous nannoplankton, primarily to model biotic responses to recent and current global changes. EE is recognized as a world-expert of Mesozoic paleoceanography; she has an outstanding reputation for Oceanic Anoxic Events and black shales that have been explored also using unconventional and innovative approaches. From a technical viewpoint, she has developed a protocol for scientific drilling on land aimed at recovery of “critical intervals” and successive laboratory preparation and archiving.
\\ \\
The international recognition of the EE’s contributions to stratigraphy and paleoceanography is demonstrated by her publications in top peer-reviewed journals such as Science, Nature, and Nature Geoscience, Citation (3200 citations, Scopus) and H-Index (H = 33, Scopus; 44, Google Scholar), invitation to give key-note lectures at International Conferences, and funded projects. EE has also devoted efforts in the “transfer of knowledge”, training graduate and post-doctoral students and promoting-inspiring young researchers. Her mentoring record is qualified by the scientific and professional careers of supervised students in the past 10 years.
