Sven-Erik Dahlén - Curriculum Vitae#

Sven-Erik Dahlén MD, PhD, is Professor of Experimental Asthma and Allergy Research at Karolinska Institutet (KI) in Stockholm, Sweden, and Director of its Centre for Allergy Research-A National Centre of Excellence.

Main areas of research interest:
Translational research on eicosanoids (Leukotrienes, prostaglandins and related compounds, effects and as biomarkers), mast cells and asthma, especially mechanisms and phenotyping of severe asthma using biomarkers.

Funding:

KI, EU, IMI, Heart Lung Foundation, MRC, ALF, Vinnova, SSF, The Vårdal Foundation, Asthma & Allergy Foundation and most recently KI- SciLifeLab grants for translational medicine and the Swedish Strategic Foundation’s 5-year grant for new non-invasive biomarkers in asthma.

Commission of trust:

Principal Investigator (PI) European Network of Severe Asthma (ENFUMOSA=European Network for the understanding of Mechanisms in Severe Asthma; EU-network supported by FP5 2000-2003; FP6 2005-2009; FP7 2009-2012). PI at KI for U-BIOPRED (IMI project on severe asthma) 2011-2015, PI at KI and WP3 leader EARIP (The European Asthma Research and Innovation Partnership).

Chairman NC-IUPHAR (Nomenclature Committee of International Union of Pharmacologic Sciences) Leukotriene receptor group 1997-2001, now member. Scientific Advisor for the Swedish Public Health Institute 1992-1997. Reviewer and member editorial boards for general journals and several scientific specialist journals in pharmacology and pulmonary medicine. Advisor to several international companies in biotechnology and in the pharmaceutical industry, including member of the Board of Scientific Advisors for Merck 1995-1999.

Over the years many appointments for the Medical Faculty at KI (eg. Board of Education, Faculty Board for Research, Scientific Secretary of the Research Board of the Medical Faculty at KI Campus; Dissertation Committee; Chairman Faculty Network for Public Health Science at KI; numerous ad hoc groups; currently Chairman of the selection committee for Vice-Chancellor, Deans and Faculty Boards.

Chairman of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) Annual Congress in Stockholm September 2007. Research Director ERS 2007-2011 with responsibility for EU affairs, fellowship programme and scientific awards.

External reviewer many panels, e.g. UK MRC Asthma Centres 2010, NIAID Asthma and Allergy Centres 2011 and 2016, member UK NC3R Asthma Advisory Panel since 2012.

External examiner of about 25 Doctoral Theses including six abroad (UK, The Netherlands and Italy).

Training of fellows: Supervisor of about 50 doctoral and post doctoral fellows.

Chairman and organiser of umpteen scientific meetings from workshops and mini-symposia to major congresses.

Publications: About 300 original peer-reviewed papers, 40 Reviews and 10 books. The work has been cited more than 13,500 times achieving an h-factor 57.
