Dr Antonio Costa is a Senior Researcher at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), Sezione di Bologna, Italy, where he was the Director from 2019 to 2022. He has been Researcher at INGV from 2007. He received his PhD from the University of Bologna in 2004. During his PhD he spent six months at The Open University, UK, in the framework of an EU Research Training Network program. From 2005 to 2006 he was PostDoc Researcher at the University of Bristol, where he was also Honorary Research Associate from 2007 to 2009. He was Visiting Researcher at the the Earthquake Research Institute, University of Tokyo, in 2015 and at the Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich, Germany, in 2019.
He has collaborated with scientists from all over the world on numerous funded research projects and for his scientific achievements has been awarded the IAVCEI Wager Medalist in 2013. From 2019 in the list of the “top 2% scientists worldwide” of Stanford University (USA), elaborated by Ioannidis et al. (2019) (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pbio.3000384). Moreover he has been:\\

*Member of the Deep Carbon Observatory (DCO) Task Force 2020 for determining the future of DCO beyond the end of the decadal program and secure DCO's legacies (2016 - 2018).

*Coordinator of the International Eruption Column Model Inter-comparison Study endorsed by the IAVCEI Commission on Tephra Hazard Modelling (2013 - 2016).

*Expert Advisor on Volcanic Hazards for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Asian Nuclear Safety Network (ANSN), and Italian Civil Protection Department (DPC).

*Associate Editor of the Nature Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group), Frontiers in Earth Science (EPFL-Nature Publishing Group), Statistics in Volcanology (IAVCEI); Editor in Chief of the scientific journal Annals of Geophysics, INGV, Italy (2017-2019);\\
