Carbone is board certified in anatomic pathology (both in Italy and the US) and specialize in mesothelioma. Carbone diagnostic skills help him see the most unusual cases and develop new research hypotheses.\\

Carbone studies why some individuals are more susceptible than others to asbestos carcinogenesis. He discovered that heterozygous germline BAP1 mutations predispose to mesothelioma and other cancers, condition he named the BAP1 cancer syndrome, and critical mechanisms of BAP1 tumor suppressor activities, Carbone’s research is characterized by multidisciplinary collaborative team-work. In 2008, as PI, Carbone received the AACR-Landon Innovator Award for International Collaboration in Cancer Research for his research investigating a mesothelioma epidemic in Cappadocia. \\ \\
