Edit Irén Buzás is a Professor of Immunology and Chair of the Department of Genetics, Cell- and Immunobiology at Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary. For her work in the field of autoimmunity and rheumatology she received the 1995 Carol Nachman Price for Rheumatology (awarded annually since 1972 to mark outstanding international contributions to the area of rheumatology). Since 2006, her team has made basic observations, which are now included in position and guideline papers of the field. In 2011, they demonstrated for the first time that protein aggregates and EVs share biophysical properties. They introduced differential detergent lysis to distinguish EVs form protein aggregates. Later, they have also shown that EV subpopulations have distinct RNA patterns. They demonstrated the interference of chylomicrons and LDL with EV detection and isolation, and introduced protein to lipid ratio to standardize EV experiments. \\
\\
At present, she is the PI of the EV Research Group at Semmelweis University and the PI of the MTA-SE Immune Proteogenomics EV Research Group as well as of the HCEMM-SE EV group at the Hungarian Center of Excellence Molecular Medicine, a partner institute of EMBL. Since 2013, she has served a panel of the ERC. She was a Chair of a Working group in the BM1202 -European Network on Microvesicles and Exosomes in Health and Disease (ME-HAD). Currently she is participating at EU TRAIN-EV EV Training Network. Her current research focuses cardiovascular aspects of EVs. She is currently setting up a Central EV Research, Service and Reference laboratory at Semmelweis University. Since 2019, she is a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers in the field of EVs in the past few years. She is a founding member of the International Society of Extracellular Vesicles, ISEV. Since 2014, she has been serving in the Board of Directors of ISEV, and she is a re-elected Executive Chair of Education of the society. She ahs organized the 2nd ISEV Workshop in 2013 (Budapest). She was the organizer of the 5th Annual Meeting of ISEV in Rotterdam in 2016.
