*1962-8: Girton College, Cambridge as an undergraduate and graduate
*1968-71, Girton College, Cambridge as a Research Fellow and then Fellow and Director of Graduate Studies in History.
*1971-1990: Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader-Elect at the University of Manchester (History Dept)
*1990-present: Beit Professor of Commonwealth History at Oxford and Professorial Fellow of Balliol College.
*1987-93: Member of British National Committee of International Historical Congress
