Bruce Brown is Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Brighton responsible for all research across the life, physical and social sciences and arts and humanities and before that spent twenty years as Dean of the University's Faculty of Arts and Architecture. He was selected by the Funding Councils for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, as one of four ‘distinguished academics’, to chair the assessment of all arts and humanities research produced by higher education institutions across the United Kingdom for REF2014 and, before that, for RAE2008. Since, 1991 he has been in continuous appointment as specialist advisor to the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation. In 2010 he was appointed by the Portuguese Ministério da Educação to chair the Fundação para a Ciência ea Tecnologia’s Research Grants Panel [[Arts] and, in 2103 was an assessor for the Italian Agenzia Nazionale di Valutazione del sistema Universitario e della Ricerca. In 2009 he was invited by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) to join an International Panel of Experts established advising the Portuguese Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior on national provision in arts and culture higher education in Portugal. He continues as a member of the International Board of Governors of Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in Tel Aviv, Israel. He has served on many other national groups including, for a decade from 2000, the Advisory Board of the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Polytechnics and Colleges’ Funding Council (1991) and, for ten years from 1983, the Council for National Academic Awards. Other work has included Trustee responsibilities for the Crafts Council (2014-), the Arts Council South East (1997-2000) and the Ditchling Museum (2006-12012).

Bruce Brown has continued to publish and speak on topics such as visual memory, arts education and research leadership both throughout the UK and abroad and he is currently an Editor of Design Issues: Research Journal published by MIT Press, USA. Since 1970 he has been an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and, in 2004, was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Art in London.
