!!Marc Boone - Biography

Marc Boone is one of the most creative young medievalists. He started in financial history, then moved into political and institutional themes, and finally became essentially a social and economic historian.

Marc Boone is internationally recognized as an expert in urban history, the history of medieval finance, the social features of housing, the repression of sodomy, the role of top officials at the court of the dukes of Burgundy, the urban revolts. He received twice an award from the two Belgian Academies for his studies on Urban History.

On the international level, he is a member of the International Committee of the European Association of Urban Historians. He is the chair of the International Interuniversity Attraction Pole on Urban Society in the Law Countries, and as such organised about 15 international conferences. He is the chief editor of the "Studies in European Urban History" (Brepols), for about 20 volumes until now. He is in charge of several international research programs, such as VNC (a co-production of the Flemish "Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek" and the Dutch "Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek" and the Dutch "Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek"), and programs organised by the CNRS (Paris) and the European Science Foundation.

Marc Boone has been a guest professor at the University of Dijon (France), and at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He also gave talks in quite all European countries, as well as in the United States (Princeton, Columbia University, Darthmouth, Rutgers, etc.). He was a guest of the Netherlands Institute of Advanced Studies in Wassenaar.

Mark Boone is (or was) a member of the board of several scientific journals in the Nethrelands and France: "Tijdschrift voor Sociale Geschiedenis" (1984-1992), "Bijdragen en Mededelingen betreffende de Geschiedenis der Nederlanden" (1997 - 2003), "Revue du Nord" (from 1997 on), "Annales de Bourgogne" (from 2005 on), "Jaarboek voor Middeleeuwse Geschiedenis".
