!!Cardiff Knowledge Hub Newsletter
!Winter 2017
[{Image src='Petersen_Ole.jpg' caption='Professor Ole Petersen, Honorary Academic Director, Cardiff Knowledge Hub and Vice-President, Academia Europaea' height='200' alt='Ole Petersen' class='image_left'}] I start with some important news on the European Scientific Advice Mechanism, (SAM). The first SAM topic to be coordinated by the SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies) Consortium will be led by Academia Europaea, with responsibility for delivery of the work given to the Cardiff Hub. ''Food from the Oceans'' will address the key question of how more food and biomass can be obtained from the oceans in a way that does not deprive future generations of their benefits, I would like to thank the now more than 800 AE Members who have already responded to our request for information about their expertise. This shows real commitment and is essential for our active role in SAPEA.

!Update on the European Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM)

As reported in the last Newsletter, the SAPEA project formally started on 1st November.
\\ \\
Ole Petersen represented Academia Europaea, at the meeting between Commissioner Carlos Moedas, the High Level Group and members of the SAPEA Consortium, held in Brussels on 30th January. The meeting also involved Robert-Jan Smits, Director-General of Research and Innovation at the European Commission, Johannes Klumpers, Head of the Scientific Advice Mechanism Unit and Sir Paul Nurse MAE FRS, Director of the Crick Institute in London.
\\ \\
The first Steering Group meeting for the Food from the Oceans topic was held the following day, attended by Ole Petersen and the Cardiff Hub Manager, Louise Edwards. Louise’s initial tasks are to establish two workings group of experts and coordinate the gathering of published scientific evidence. For further information on the project, including the nominations process for the working groups and other voluntary positions, please contact Louise ([EdwardsL31@cardiff.ac.uk|mailto:EdwardsL31@cardiff.ac.uk]).

!List of expertise

To support the work in SAPEA, the Cardiff Hub has, as mentioned above, contacted all Academia Europaea members to request current information on their areas of expertise. MAEs are asked to complete an online form, which should take only a few minutes. The response so far has been really excellent, but more responses are still welcome. For further information, please contact Judith Lockett ([LockettJG@cardiff.ac.uk|mailto:LockettJG@cardiff.ac.uk]).
