!!Jean Bourgain, 1954-2018 

[Jean Bourgain|Member/Bourgain_Jean], a member of the Mathematics section of Academia Europaea and a leader in analysis who was awarded a Fields Medal in 1994, died December 22 at the age of 64.

In the citation for his 2018 Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement (page 457), awarded by the American Mathematical Society, the committee wrote: "''Jean Bourgain is a giant in the field of mathematical analysis, which he has applied broadly and to great effect. In many instances, he provided foundations for entirely new areas of study, and in other instances he gave mathematics new tools and techniques.''"

Bourgain received many other prizes and awards including the Salem Prize, the Ostrowski Prize, the Shaw Prize, the Crafoord Prize, and the Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics.
