The Academy is saddened to annouce that [Evguenii Burov|User/Burov_Evgueni], a prominent member of the Earth and Cosmic Sciences section of Academia Europaea, died unexpectedly on October 9, 2015.

It is with the deepest sadness that we, the friends and colleagues of Evguenii Burov, a prominent member of the Earth and Cosmic Sciences section of Academia Europaea, have to announce his untimely death on Friday October 9, 2015 whilst on a scientific trip to Chile.
\\ \\
An industrious and highly productive scientist, fifty-two year old Evguenii was internationally acknowledged as an eminent Earth scientist. After training at the prestigious Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Leeds, Evguenii moved to France, where he worked firstly at the Institut de Physique du Globe and then at the Bureau de Recherche Géologique et Minières. He was appointed as a professor at the Université Pierre et Marie Currie in 1999, and he was promoted to the role of Professor Class Exceptional in 2012.
\\ \\
Throughout his career as a geophysicist and geodynamic modeller of the processes that shape our planet, Evguenii — better known as Genia to his close friends and family — established himself as a true leader in his field. He was elected as a member of the Academia Europaea in 2009, the recipient of numerous prestigious European and International scientific distinctions, including the Stephan Mueller Medal of the European Geosciences Union and the Edward Flinn medal of the International Lithosphere Program. He was the laureate of a prestigious ERC Advanced Grant. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Tectonophysics and was the leader of the International Lithosphere Task Force on numerical modelling of geodynamic processes. As genuine pillar of the solid Earth modelling community, and the key instigator of a number of important collaborative efforts, Genia was one of the most cited scientists of the former USSR. Alongside this academic prestige, however, he will be remembered for his impish smile, his tender concern for others, and a willingness to total dedication to whatever he did.
\\ \\
Academia Europaea offers all our thoughts and condolences to his wife, Katia, and his young son Alexei at this difficult time.
