Tiago de Oliveira Pinto, from São Paulo, Brazil, born December 10th, 1957. Studied goldsmith's art and music (violin) in Sao Paulo. Musicology, Cultural Anthropology and Latin American Studies at Free University Berlin, Germany. Music (main subject: viola) at Hochschule der Künste 1981-1984, Berlin. PhD 1989. Scientific staff member of the International Institute for Traditional Music, Berlin, 1989-1996. Director of the Brazilian Cultural Institute in Germany, Berlin, 1996-2002. Full professor of Cultural Anthropology at the Department of Social Anthropology, Universidade de Sao Paulo, sao Paulo, Brazil. Since 2006 wirkte professor of the Program for post-graduate studies at the department. Visiting Professor for Ethnomusikologie at the Musikwissenschaftliches Institut der Universität Hamburg, 2007-2009. Since 2009 professor and chair of Transcultural Music Studies, Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar and Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. Since 2013 expert of the Committee of Intangible Cultural heritage, German UNESCO Commission.
