*2003 Prize for the best article published in Explorations in Economic History in 2002/2003 was awarded to his paper: 'Rich and Poor before the Industrial Revolution: a comparison between Java and the Netherlands at the beginning of the 19th century', Explorations in Economic History 40 (2003), 1-23
*2007 Prize for the best article published in the European Review of Economic History in 2005/2006 for the paper, (together with Maarten Prak), ‘Towards an economic interpretation of citizenship.
