Tivadar Tulassay - Biography#


Tivadar Tulassay is affiliated with the Ist Department of Paediatrics, Medical Faculty, Semmelweis University Budapest, Hungary. He was born on January 18th, 1949, in Galánta (Slovakia) and studied medicine in the Medical School of Budapest. He worked at the Department of Physiology, and subsequently at the Department of Paediatrics, and spent five years the Neonatal Unit of the University. Consequently as a postdoctoral fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation he worked in the University Children’s Hospital, Ruperto Carola University of Heidelberg, Germany. He has been a specialist in paediatrics, neonatology and nephrology.

In 1983 he started working in the Ist Department of Paediatrics, Semmelweis University, as chief of the Division of Nephrology, where he was promoted to become Professor of Paediatrics in 1992. In 1993 the Medical Faculty appointed him as director and chairman of the Ist Department of Paediatrics. In 1999 he established a research laboratory which has been acknowledged and supported by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He is one of the founders of the Semmelweis Doctoral School for Ph.D. studies in Budapest.

In 2001 he has been elected as corresponding member, in 2007 as full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. From 2003 until 2012 he was acting as rector (president) of Semmelweis University.

His main scientific interests covers postnatal adaptation and regulation of water and electrolyte homeostasis, development of kidney function in premature neonates, vasoactive hormones in the regulation of volume and electrolyte homeostasis, childhood hypertension, civilisation diseases, as late medical consequences of low birth weight, perinatal immunology, diabetes and fibrosis.
