Martyn Poliakoff - Biography#


Martyn Poliakoff began his academic career as at King's College, Cambridge, obtaining his B.A (1969) and Ph.D. (1973) under the supervision of J. J. Turner FRS on the Matrix Isolation of Large Molecules. From 1972-79 he worked in the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the University of Newcastle upon Tyne as a Research Officer.

In 1979, he was appointed to a Lectureship in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham where he is now a Research Professor in Chemistry, Professor Poliakoff is also an Honorary Professor of Chemistry at Moscow State University and was elected foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2011.

He was elected Fellow (2002), and Fellow of the RSC (2002) and of the IChemE (2004) and currently serves on the IChemE Council. He was awarded CBE for “Services to Sciences” in the 2007/8 New Year Honours. In 2008, he was elected an Honorary member of the Chemical Society of Ethiopia.

Current research interests involve chemical applications of supercritical fluids, with particular emphasis on Green Chemistry; (MP is currently Chair of the Editorial Board of the RSC journal Green Chemistry http://www.rsc.org/greenchem. He is also one of the presenters of the highly successful YouTube chemistry channel, The Periodic Table of videos, http://www.periodicvideos.com.
