Important positions during his life
- Milner first worked as a schoolteacher, then as a programmer at Ferranti, before entering academia at City University, London
- He then held positions at Swansea University and Stanford University
- Professor at the University of Edinburgh, 1973
- Co-founder of the Laboratory for Foundations of Computer Science (LFCS)
- He returned to Cambridge as the head of the Computer Laboratory, 1995
- SICSA Advanced Research Fellow and part-time Chair of Computer Science at the University of Edinburgh, 2009
- He died of a heart attack March 20, 2010, three weeks after the death of his wife Lucy
