!!Ülo Mander - Biography

Ülo Mander is Professor of Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology and Head of the Department of Geography, Institute of Ecology and Earth Sciences at the University of Tartu, Estonia. He received a B.Sc. in physical geography (1977) and Ph.D. in biology/ecology (1983) at the University of Tartu, Estonia.

His research and teaching are focused on landscape ecology (nutrient cycling at landscape and catchment levels) and ecological engineering (constructed wetlands: design and performance). He has been supervisor of 27 PhD theses and is currently supervising 14 PhD students in earth sciences, environmental research and engineering.

He has been involved in 10 EU 5th, 6th and 7th FP projects (2 INCO-Copernicus projects, PRIMROSE, SPIN, BioHab, EUROLAN, IP SENSOR, SANBOX, STRAVAL, FACCE ERA-Net CAOS) and two INTERREG projects. He was Lead author of the 2013 Supplement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for NGGIP: “Wetlands” (2010-2013). and expert of the EU R&D evaluation panel expert on sustainable use and management of water and the evaluation panel on Regional Potential development (2000-2011). He has organized (as head or member of organization and scientific committee) 48 international conferences, symposia and workshops. Prof. Mander has been visiting scientist/professor at various universities and research centers in Germany, Sweden, Norway, Japan, China, USA and France. At present, he is Visiting Professor at the French National Institute of Science and Technology for Environment and Agriculture (IRSTEA) in Paris. Since 1994 he is/has been member of editorial board of 7 international peer reviewed journals (Ecological Engineering, Landscape and Urban Planning, Landscape Ecology, Journal for Nature Conservation, Ecological Indicators, Wetlands, Regional Environmental Change).
