Christoph von der Malsburg - Biography#



Dr. Christoph von der Malsburg is presently Professor and Senior Fellow at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies. He is also Coordinator of the Bernstein Focus Neurotechnology Frankfurt, an effort to develop a computer-based visual system, financed by the German Federal Ministry of Research. He received his PhD in physics from Heidelberg University in 1970, spent 17 years at the Section of Neurobiology of the Max-Planck-Institute for biophysical Chemistry in Gˆttingen, was Professor of Computer Science (and Neuroscience, Physics and Psychology) at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles (1988-2007), co-founded the Institute for Neural Computing (Neuroinformatik) at Bochum University, where he was Professor of Systems Biophysics (1990-2006).

He is recognized as pioneer of modeling self-organization in the visual system (IEEE Pioneer Award, Beckurts Foundation Award, Koerber Award, Hebb Award) and is the creator of the dynamic link architecture of brain function. He co-founded the companies Eyematic, Los Angeles (now part of Google) and ZN Vision, Bochum (now the face recognition development division of the American Company L1 Identity Solutions).
