Anders Malmberg - Biography#


Anders Malmberg is Professor of Economic Geography since 1999, and Pro Vice Chancellor of Uppsala University since 2012. He was the Director of the Centre for Research on Innovation and Industrial Dynamics (CIND) 2003-2011, and Dean of the Faculty of Social Science at Uppsala University 2008-2011. He got his PhD in 1989 at Uppsala University, and was the research co-ordinator of the European Science Foundation Scientific Programme on Regional and Urban Restructuring in Europe between 1990 and 1994. He was the Director of the PhD programme in social and economic geography between 1996 and 2005. He has held visiting research positions at Durham University, UK and at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences.

His research focuses on industrial dynamics and local and regional economic development, with an emphasis on the study of innovation and transformation processes in clusters and innovation systems. Among recent research activities: 1. Leader of the research programme Clusters and Innovation systems in time and space, Centre for Research on Innovation and Industrial Dynamics (CIND) (Funded by Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, a research foundation (Vinnova) and Uppsala University), 2. Leader of Project on Centres of Excellence in Research and Innovation (Vinnova), 3. Leader of Project on Creativity and Innovation in Cultural Industries, funded by a research foundation (Handelsbankens forskningsstiftelser), 4. Project leader Real-time Monitoring of the Cluster Initiative Uppsala Bio (Vinnova).

He is a leading researcher within his field with many publications, often cited by other researchers. He is also active as a member of five Editorial Advisory Boards for international scientific journals and he has published a large number of referees in these and another 17 journals.

He has held many positions within Uppsala University and also many external assignments. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
