Hans Kamp#

Short laudatio by Eva Hajicová#

Prof. Kamp is the author of an original and most influential theory of discourse (Discourse Representation Theory), which constitutes a conceptual framework for a description of discourse syntax and semantics, fulfilling in a most adequate way the criteria of explicitness and thus offering a most useful possibility of computer implementation. His treatment of the intersentential relationships, including coreference and other aspects of text cohesion, has brought a substantially new level of discourse representation.

His framework has found an extremely broad positive response on the international scene, has been widely discussed at international conferences in Europe and America, in scientific journals, and so on, and has been incorporated into many of the most important systems of natural language processing in various countries. There is hardly any international meeting on language and communication where his theory would not be referred to and applied.
