Massimo Inguscio - Biography#

Massimo Inguscio was born in Lecce (Italy) on 26/01/1950. In 1972 he received the master degree in Physics “cum laude” from University of Pisa and in 1976 he completed his PhD in Physics “cum laude” at Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa. He has been visiting scientist at Boulder, College de France, MPQ. He has been Full Professor of Physics at University of Florence since 1991.

Massimo Inguscio has a long-standing experience of experimental research in: atomic, molecular and optical physics; quantum optics; light-matter interaction; high-precision spectroscopy; laser cooling; quantum degenerate gases. His most important achievements include: experimental tests of QED theory of helium and of the symmetrization postulate for spin-0 particles; first Italian Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) with Rubidium atoms; invention of the sympathetic cooling technique with different atomic species; first BEC of Potassium atoms (41K and 39K); study of ultracold atoms in optical lattices and demonstration of their application as accurate force sensors; first investigation of disorder physics with ultracold gases and demonstration of Anderson localization.

Massimo Inguscio has been given more than 100 invited talks at major conferences (including ICOLS, ICAP, KITP Santa Barbara, ESF BEC San Feliu) and tens of colloquia in prestigious foreign Academic institutions (including College de France, Boulder, Harvard, MIT, Vienna, Oxford, Cambridge, Geneve). He has also been lecturer at important International Schools (Varenna, Erice, ICTP Trieste, Forth-Heraklion).

M. I. is author of more than 260 publications on international journals and books (including 6 Science, 2 Nature, 2 Nature Physics, 41 Physical Review Letters, 1 Review of Modern Physics) and editor of more than 10 books. His publications have more than 6900 citations, with more than 700 citations/year in the last 5 years, and h-index 41 (source: ISI WoS).
