Ernesto Estrada (47) is a professor and Chair in Complexity Science at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, U.K.). Estrada is well known for his works in the field of network theory as well as in mathematical chemistry. He has combined highly rigorous physico-mathematical approaches with applications in many different fields ranging from chemistry and biology to the study of social phenomena. He is the main proponent of several mathematical methods for characterizing the structure of complex networks and to study the dynamical processes taking place on them. He is frequently cited for his work on the study of network communicability (“Estrada-Hatano communicability”), the use of statistical mechanics tools for the study of complex systems (e.g., the “Estrada index”), and for his work on the spectral characterization of networks (“network returnability”, “network heterogeneity”, “spectral scaling method”, etc.). Estrada is also well-known in the field of mathematical chemistry where he has been active since the 1990’s. As the result of his work in developing new physico-mathematical tools for studying molecules he is the author of two international patents, which are under exploitation by pharmaceutical industries. He applied his experience in this field as a researcher of the Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre (SEAC), Unilever (U.K.) during 2002-2003.

In total Estrada has published more than 160 scientific papers and book chapters, which have collected more than 6,600 citations. He is frequently invited as plenary speaker in major scientific conferences, and has given seminars and colloquia in many universities of U.K., Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Netherland, Denmark, Israel, Japan, USA, South Africa, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, among others. Estrada is an Expert of the European Commission for the revision of grants, reviewer of Grant Applications for The Romanian National Council for Research and Development and for The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Estrada is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Complex Networks, published by Oxford University Press and he is the editorial board of other international journals.
