Marco Dorigo#

Short laudatio by Hermann Maurer#

Dorigo, who is only 48 years old has had an enormous impact in a special area of artificial intelligence called swarm theory or swarm intelligence. Indeed his books and many of his 200 publications (80 in refereed journals) are considered seminal contributions in this field. Dorigo, with a CiteseerX rank of 507 and an H-Index of 56 is certainly one of the most quoted computer scientists in Europe. This is due to the combination of opening a new field, of writing three books in the areas concerned, giving a score of invited or keynote talks and making sure that journals and organisations spreading the world have been founded or have taken notice of his efforts.

Some numbers will support above statements: between January and July 2009 Dorigo gave 9 invited/keynote talks on some version of swarm behaviour, and he a total of talks at this level of about 30 since 2005 as the theory evolved. Before this period his major talks, again almost 20 since 1993 (when he was only 32) dealt with intelligent agents and other aspects of AI.

Dorigo is reviewer for a multitude of publications. The list is impressively: 4OR, ACM Computing Surveys, Adaptive Behavior, Advances in Water Resources, Annals of Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, Annals of Operations Research, Ap¬plied Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems, Australian & New Zealand Industrial and Applied Mathematics Journal, Autonomous Robots, BMC Bioinformatics, Central European Journal of Operations Research, Circuits, Systems and Signal Processing, Computational Optimization and Applications, Computer Surveys, Computers & Geosciences, Computers & Industrial Engineering, Computers & Operations Research, Discrete and Applied Mathematics, Electronics Letters, Environmental Monitoring and Assessment, European Jour¬nal of Operational Research, Evolutionary Computation, Future Generation Computer Systems, IEE Electronic Letters, IEE Proceedings in Computers and Digital Techniques, IEEE Control Systems, IEEE Robotics and Automation Magazine, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I, IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology, IEEE Transactions on In¬strumentation and Measurement, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Mechathronics, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IIE Transac¬tions, IIE Transactions on Design and Manufacturing, Information Processing Letters, Interface , International Journal of Approximate Reasoning, International Journal of Control, Automation, and Systems, International Journal of Geographic Information Systems, International Journal of Microelectronic Systems Integration, International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, International Journal of Power and Energy Systems, International Journal of Production Economics, Interna¬tional Journal of Systems Integration, International Transactions in Operational Research, Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, Journal of Computer Science and Technology, Journal of Mathematical Modelling and Algorithms, Journal of the Australian Mathematical Society, Machine Learning, Methodology and Computing in Applied Probability, Microprocessing and Micropro¬gram¬ming, Nature, Neural Computing & Applications, Omega, Operations Research, ORSA Journal on Computing, Pattern Analysis and Applications Journal, Pattern Recognition Letters, Physics Letters A, Physics of Life Reviews, Robotics and Autonomous Systems, The Computer Journal, Water Resources Research.

Dorigo has supervised successfully some 12 Ph. D.’s so far, and is currently supervising an equal number. He has supervised some 40 M.Sc. students. Dorigo is sought after for tutorials and workshops in his area (some 20). His work is not as narrow as some might think. He is e.g. also a co-author of a text book on mechanics that has been in use at the Politecnico Milano for ten years. He has been actively involved in the organization of many large conferences, indeed he has been general chair of twelve!

Overall, Dorigo is very active and one of the founders and leaders in his field that is not at all represented in Academia Europaea so far, one more reason to make sure that he is nominated.
